Hi I was just reading the email you sent out and you say your missing some breeds from your panel,including American pit bull terrier, and that’s really why I had done this DNA to see if my dog Izzy had any pit bull in her…. I’m really Quite upset about this as I have already donated $130.00, this leads me to believe not only is the wait going to be 3-4 months for the trailblazer results BUT now your saying I will have to wait another 3 or 4 months until you add the American pit bull terrier to your panel…. is this correct???? 😖

Hi Mary,
I can assure you that American Pit Bull Terrier will be added to the panel no later than December. The reason that it hadn’t been included in the panel initially is because there was no verified, publicly-available genotype data from purebred APBTs. Our algorithm requires at least 12 dogs per breed. We already have data from 3 registered ABPTs, so we reached out to get samples from an additional 9 registered APBTs. These samples are currently being sequenced.
I can also confirm that Izzy is in the same sequencing batch as these 9 APBTs. So, the timing is such that there should be little delay between the return of her data and the updated breed reference with American Pit Bull Terrier!
APBT is a top priority for addition to the breed reference. Soon to be added, also, are Chinook, Saluki, and English Shepherd.
Hi Kathleen, received Izzy’s DNA results which is only 46% ??? And the most % was an Australian cattle Dog …?? Which in a 100 yrs I never would have guessed nor any one else… I know you said you would be adding the APBT and it went out with Izzy’s samples,any idea when Izzy’s results will be updated with the APBT ?? Will you email me ?

Hi Mary,
I’m sorry for the delay in adding American Pit Bull Terrier to the reference panel. We completed sequencing the 9 APBT candidate samples but discovered that 2 of them were mixed breed, not purebred. We have three confidently purebred APBTs being sequenced right now, so that we can complete the reference panel for 12 dogs in the breed. Then, I’ll be performing some quality checks and simulations to ensure the new reference panel is reliable.
The large percentage of unknown in Izzy’s current results do seem consistent with APBT not yet being detected.
Izzy’s and all participants results will definitely be updated when the reference panel updates. We will also send out an email notifying the update and which breeds we’ve added.

Darwin’s Ark performs genetic sequencing for research purposes only. Submission of a DNA sample does not guarantee that that sample will be processed. For processed samples, Darwin’s Ark and Darwin’s Ark Foundation do not guarantee success in processing. Results of successfully processed samples will be made available to the submitter. You understand that each animal is an individual, and their traits are the result of the interaction of genetics and environment. Darwin’s Ark Foundation does not guarantee that the results of a genetic test will predict a trait in an animal, or in any way guarantee the mental or physical health or well-being of the animal. You agree that, the results of this sequencing will not be used for medical or behavioral purposes, or as a substitute for veterinary care or diagnosis. You understand that an animal’s ancestry and genetic sequencing results may not predict its medical or behavioral characteristics, and that such results do not necessarily specify or characterize breed or traits for the purpose of determining whether a particular animal falls under an area’s breed laws or regulations. You agree that Darwin’s Ark is not responsible for providing you with any notification about breed ancestry for an area’s breed laws or regulations. You further agree that Darwin’s Ark is not responsible for injuries occurring as a result of obtaining the swab sample. You understand that errors may occur in the genetic sequencing process, including provisioning of sampling equipment and the obtaining and shipping of genetic materials. You additionally agree that the Darwin’s Ark Foundation is not liable or otherwise responsible for any such errors. You agree that Darwin’s Ark and the Darwin’s Ark Foundation may use genetic materials you provide for research purposes without limitation.
Darwin’s Ark provides the opportunity for pet owners to expedite the sequencing of an animal’s genetics for a fee. Expedited sampling is intended for use in Darwin’s Ark research and not for medical or behavioral purposes. Darwin’s Ark and its agents will exercise due diligence to sequence genetic samples received through this for-fee program. If DNA extraction and/or processing fails, Darwin’s Ark will provide a second kit without fee. If genetic extraction and/or processing from the second kit fails, Darwin’s Ark will provide a refund less the costs of shipping and handling. If a genetic sample from the same animal is sent subsequent to failure of extraction and/or processing from the second kit without prior approval from the researchers, it will not be processed and any fee associated with such subsequent genetic sampling will not be returned. Damages or liability, including shipping and handling costs, for any errors related to the sequence analysis, including ancestry testing, of for-fee samples is limited to the payment received.
