Last year I had two papillons that died within 6 months of each other. One was 10 and the other was 12 and both were in good health prior to being diagnosed with a heart murmur then later cancer. Are there some breeds that are predisposed to cancer?

I have read that retrievers are prone to cancers. Not only do we look to breeds, but there are studies looking at spay/neuter connections.

    Hi Erika,
We do find evidence of some breeds being prone to certain cancer types. While we hope our studies will eventually lead to better understanding and treatment options for dogs another reason to study cancer in dogs is that it is a good model for human cancers as well. As dogs and humans are affected by the same types of cancers.
