Several years ago I took her to a parade, as we made our way down the crowded sidewalk to meet up with friends, Scruffy thought everyone was there to see her. She stopped and greeted almost everyone and she still loves to be the center of attention wherever she goes. 1 LikeLoading... Sex: Male Owner's Stated Breed Mix: Dog description
Rusty is a rescue, previously a stray, so we are not sure of his exact age - he has been with us around 4 years, and the rescue estimated that he was around 4 when we got him.
We got a DNA test to find out his breed. The results were 75% beagle, 12.5% jack Russel terrier, 12.5% other hound/terrier breeds. He is medium sized, about 11kg. His hair is short, mostly reddish brown, with white belly, socks and tip of his tail.
He is very social with other dogs, and loves playing, chasing and wrestling with them. He makes friends with dogs of all sizes and breeds. He can sometimes play a bit too rough for other dogs liking, but I have never seen him be aggressive.
He is nervous around people he doesn't know. He is also nervous in any unfamiliar situation e.g. visiting someone's house, vet visits. He hates fireworks and other loud, unexpected noises. He's not a big fan of helicopters either, if one flies over when we are on a walk he will freeze, cower and tremble.
He has high energy levels, and needs a lot of excercise. However, once he is walked regularly he is calm in the house, and spends a lot of the day in bed. He is not overly affectionate - he does not get excited when we get home from work, doesn't lick our face etc, but he does seem to enjoy pets/ belly rubs when we give them.
He was fairly easy to train and responded to treats. He has learned to sit, lie down, give the paw, jump and spin. However, his recall is only so-so. He loves being off lead, but we are careful where we do this. He will absolutely chase rabbits, squirrels, cats and deer, and will not come back when called. When he is chasing, he makes a very high pitched bark/squeal, that sounds like he is in pain. Maybe it's a beagle thing.
He seems to have no interest in actually*catching* them, only chasing. Occasionally we meet a cat that doesn't run away, and he just barks at it from about a meter away until it runs, then he chases it again.
We actually own a cat as well, and he tolerates it as long as it doesn't get to close to him. He will growl, and snap if the cat tries to snuggle up to him.
He rarely barks in the house, but does bark a lot during play with other dogs. He will also bark at things like traffic cones, fallen tree branches, big rocks etc. He sometimes barks at people if they are sitting on the ground, no idea why.
He has a funny little walk that people often comment on. He lifts his front paws up quite high, kind of like a horsey type prance. He can also run very fast for his size. He sheds quite a bit. He hates water, and absolutely will not voluntarily swim. He likes to chase a stick, but won't bring it back, just chews on it. He has a few toys that he likes to chew on or throw around at home, but he's not really interested in them once we are outside. He could take or leave tennis balls. Dog summary An 8 year old beagle/jrt cross who thinks every other dog is his best friend. Quirk He hates traffic cones Does best Coaxing other dogs into playing Fun Story His nickname at the dog park is Santa's Little Helper, because he resembles the dog from the Simpsons, and has a funny cartoony run?. He really throws his front paws up in the air. Please see your dog's personality profile prediction below for your dog.
