Dog description

Loki Redbear (80 lbs.) is a male rough coated red chow chow with full mane and feathers on tail, belly and legs. My constant companion, he is very protective of his “pack”/house (including family and feline brother) and is comfortable in new situations, showing no aggression toward new people or other animals (even if they are aggressive to him first). Constantly taking non- verbal cues from me, he assesses new people from afar and prefers to be the initiator- but did well in obedience and agility trials, learning quickly, but not seeing the point of repeating accomplished tasks over and over (not toy or food oriented, preferring positive feedback from owner instead). Neither prey drive or food aggression, he waits patiently for his share and often plays gently with his cat brother (who sinks his claws in his mane and goes for a ride). Loves walks in nature but equally satisfied to be a couch potato-not a cuddler, he lays/sits close between me and any possible threat/egress, just in case. Communicates with a very direct stare, meaningful snuffle and tail wag; often only needs a look or soft word to correct behavior, shuts down if yelled at or hit. Overall in excellent health, was diagnosed with eye entropion and slight elbow dysplasia at 2. No problem with skin as long as groomed regularly.

Fun Story

Loki loves to go camping, trailing and to the beach. Since he lives in Florida, he wears red protective doggles to keep the sand, salt and UV rays out of his eyes while surf swimming. Once while camping in a thick FL forest, Loki and I went trail bike riding. After an hour, When we turned toward camp, Loki was laserintent on something moving in the brush beside us but didn’t try to stop. Whatever it was, it kept just out of sight. Once home we got a drink and sat down to relax then we saw a full-grown panther lounging on the picnic table in the campsite next to us. Loki stood up, locked eyes with the big lion and growled softly while raising his ruff, etc. to full chow fighting mode. After a long moment the cat licked its paws, stretched and slowly melted into the trees. Loki Redbear seemed to snuffle in disgust, walked over to me and lay down on my feet with a sigh. He seemed to say “I got this, Mama”. … he’s always loved cats.
