Dog description

Darla is a rescue dog. We got her from a prison program, in which inmates were working with dogs to train them and develop vet tech skills. She is very focused and alert. She is very "ball-focused" and will follow the ball in your hand no matter how much you move it around. She is very athletic and, when she was younger, very fast. She used to stay low to the ground when she ran (like a cattle dog) and she would chase the ball to the point of exhaustion. She has become more relaxed and careful as she has gotten older and developed arthritis in her hip joints. She is extremely bright. She has learned to "count" up to five by barking when you hold up fingers between one and five. We suspect that she is just extremely good at following subtle movements and social cues and has figured out how to interpret those into how many barks are required. She is a cuddler and loves to lay in my husband

Dog summary

Sweet girl who LOVES to chase the ball

Quirk

She is not food motivated at all. If you throw a cookie and a ball into the pool, she will go for the ball every time.

Fun Story

Okay, I have more than one story. First, Darla was in prison! She was part of an inmate vet-tech training program and lived with her inmate for about 6 months. When she was ready for adoption, she had a graduation ceremony to show off her skills. Second, Darla loves to fetch toys and her favorite thing is to fetch out of the pool. We have a ten-foot deep pool in the backyard and when you throw her toy in, she launches off the side to get it. When she was young, she would fetch toys off the bottom of the deep end. Absolutely nothing stands between Darla and her toy. Finally, she has a pack-mate, Jasper, who is a bit older than she is. She treats him like a sweet, older, but maybe not too bright brother. When we throw the ball for him, she runs to it too, and she puts her nose on it until Jasper finds it. Oh wait, one more, she can count! If you hold up between 1 and 5 fingers, she will bark the number of fingers!
