Dog description

Like her name implies, Raven is incredibly intelligent and very physically and mentally active. She's learned about 15 novice level tricks, including going over and under objects, perching on them with her two front feet, jumping up into my arms, spin in either direction, a chin rest, backing up, a woof, and more. Her greatest love is playing frisbee, with nosework/scentwork a close second. She has been known to dig through my dog training bag, systematically taking out and ignoring bags of treats, extra leashes that she otherwise might chew on, and other supplies, to get to her nosework training travel kits and stand there and stare at them and then look back at me pointedly. She's a natural at tracking, according to the Schutzhund training group we practice with. She also loves agility and will jump into any kind of body of water and go swimming (especially to retrieve a ball) just for fun. She is suspicious of strangers and will alert bark/howl at new people unless distracted with some other incompatible behavior I ask her to do (a nose touch, changing direction, etc). But she's fearless when it comes to other things that dogs might usually need some time and counterconditioning to recover from, like falling off a dogwalk because she was going too fast. She'll get right back on and keep going. I think she might kill a small cat or other small prey animal if she were allowed to catch it, because she gets transfixed on their movements and acts like a stalker about to bolt from her frozen position at the right moment. She does have a cuddly side, too. If I ask her to come over she'll make pretend cranky whining sounds and then flop onto me, or as close as she can get, to be petted. At night she usually sleeps on my bed with her back to my back, or on top of my feet, and when I finally get settled and I'm done arranging the covers she lets out the most peaceful sigh of contentment. But sometimes if I try to pick her up to move her when she's already settled in, she's also been known to growl at me. Once it was just one short, sharp, high unhappy bark. She's the most expressive dog I've ever met, as far as being able to communicate her thoughts, and and also the most perceptive in understanding what I'm saying or doing.
